Tewksbury SAPC Underage Drinking PSA Audio Script draft 3

*possible intro* Different voice actor for this part:

Peer pressure dialogue: “It’s just one beer. One beer won’t hurt.”

Parent voice: “Well as long as you’re not leaving the house, I guess letting you drink underage is harmless.”

[Change in voice actor here.]

Actually, it’s not.

According to the Center for Disease Control, those who start drinking alcohol underage are SIX times more likely to develop an alcohol problem than those who start drinking at age 21. It’s true. It’s even more alarming that a third of high school students consumed alcohol in the past 30 days, and nationally, 20% of minors aged 12-20 did as well.

Although we all have our own ideas about when someone is mature enough to drink, the fact of the matter is: while you feel you may be, your brain isn’t. Studies have shown that repeated alcohol use by teens is linked to impaired attention span and poor test results on mathematics and spatial recognition. These studies also show the magnitude of change to be 10%. That could mean the difference of a letter grade!

Making reckless decisions when drinking isn’t the only possible risk of underage drinking.

When it comes to drinking, a hangover isn’t the only thing teens should be worried about.

Did you know? According to the Center for Disease Control, those who start drinking alcohol underage are SIX times more likely to develop an alcohol problem than those who start drinking at age 21. Although we all have our own ideas about when someone is mature enough to drink, the fact of the matter is: while you may be, your brain isn’t. That’s right. Underneath all of the well-known risks to underage drinking, there are a lot of lesser known consequences, too.
